Early Treatment

What is early treatment?

Early treatment is treatment that takes place before braces.  It is helpful for treatment a variety of orthodontic problems such as crowding, protruding teeth, underbites and missing teeth before more serious problems start to develop.

How do I know whether my child needs early orthodontic treatment?

Problems that may be best treated with early include:

  • Early loss of baby teeth

  • Teeth crowding

  • Protruding front teeth

  • Underbite

  • Poor bite relationship

  • Biting or chewing difficulties

  • Facial asymmetry

  • Habits such as thumb or finger sucking

  • Mouth-breathing/snoring

Does my child need an orthodontic consultation?

It is highly recommended that a child’s first visit to the orthodontist should occur around 7 years of age.   Careful attention is paid to certain habits such as finger sucking and mouth breathing which may adversely affect dental and facial development.  Early treatment may help to correct smaller problems before they become more serious, eliminating or simplifying later treatment.
